Chennai: Flights from Chennai to Neyveli, Kadappa, Puducherry and from Salem to Bengaluru and Puducherry under the regional connectivity scheme Udan may take off now as the ministry of civil aviation has decided to put the routes for bidding again.
The routes which were awarded during the first phase of Udan scheme could not be operated because the new airlines which bagged the routes did not start services. The ministry has cancelled the earlier award of the routes so that they can be given to airlines afresh.
The cancelled routes are Chennai-Kadapa, Chennai-Neyveli, Chennai-Puducherry, Salem-Bengaluru, Salem-Puducherry. There is one service from Chennai to Kadapa being operated by Trujet.
A senior official of AAI said the routes were lying idle for more than four years as the airlines could not muster funds and personnel to start services. The rule says other airlines cannot start flights once a route is awarded to an airport.
“Now, the authority will be able to put the routes for bidding again. The ministry and AAI should look at the financial and operational capacity of airlines before awarding Udan routes to them. In the first phase, a few new companies floated airlines and won awards without proving that they could operate flights,” he added.
