Air force station, Pune has agreed to open night slots to operate commercial flights for the Pune airport.
Airports Authority of India, Pune had sent a proposal seeking more slots for the airliners during the day —which did not yield positive response. Director of the airport, Ajay Kumar, said that it has been agreed that the night slots could be opened for the flights to function. “We were told that allocation of day slots would not be possible at the moment, owing to the re-carpeting works at the station. Also, there are other ongoing developments around the airport making it difficult to operate,” he said.
Kumar has also called for prime time slots, for which approvals are yet to be sought. “Even though the slots could be opened, the airlines would have to check for the commercial viability. Airlines would be approached with the proposal,” he added.
The airport director said that a number of flights have dropped. He fears this will bring the number of
footfalls to a standstill in the present financial year. “The airport used to operate about 96-97 flights a day.
However, at present, about 85 flights are being operated after Jet Airways stopped functioning,” he said, adding, “The airport, however, will see good growth in the next three-four years with bolstered infrastructure, like increase in parking splots for aircraft, better parking facilities for passengers and other amenities that are being worked.
