Belagavi airport to get ILS by March

Belagavi: The Belagavi airport at Sambra, currently experiencing an increased influx of passenger traffic, will soon get a facility which will enable hassle-free landing of aircraft.

The Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be installed by March. Major airports in the country have this system which enables pilots land in low-visibility conditions.

Airport director Rajendra Kumar Maurya told TOI that ILS is a radio-signal powered navigation aid which includes two antennae, at the southern and northern ends. "Without an ILS, flights have to be either rerouted to nearby airports or land with difficulty after circling around and wait for better visibility and this consumes more fuel," he said.

He added that Rs 6 crore is being spent on installing the system.
