Chennai: Customs officials seized 1.53 kg of gold, worth Rs 63 lakh, and US dollars to the tune of Rs 14.3 lakh from passengers at Chennai international airport on Sunday night and Monday. They arrested two passengers.
On Sunday night, Shavushan Bare, 37, of Ramanathapuram, who arrived here from Colombo in an Air India flight (AI-274), was intercepted at the exit. On persistent questioning, he admitted to having concealed bundles containing gold paste in his rectum. Three bundles were recovered from him. On extraction, 290 gram of gold worth Rs 11.9 lakh was recovered.
On Monday morning, Sri Lankan women Sasika Rupini, 49, and Vasanthi, 49, who were bound for Colombo in an Air India flight (AI-273) were intercepted after they cleared immigration. On examination of their hand bags, 20,300 US dollars in the denominations of $100 amounting to Rs 14.30 lakh were recovered.
On Monday, Mohamed Rifayudeen, 25, of Nagapattinnum and Seeni Ibrahim, 49, of Chennai, who arrived here from Dubai in an Air India flight (AI-906), were intercepted. When searched, one gold chain weighing 115 gram was recovered from the pants pocket of Rifayudeen. On further search, six bundles containing gold in paste form were recovered from their rectums. On extraction, 667 gram of gold was recovered. In total, 782 gram of gold valued at Rs 32.18 lakh was recovered from them. One of them was arrested.
