Jaipur airport ban on kites, lanterns

Jaipur: Flying kites and lanterns is fun and part of the tradition of celebrating Makar Sankranti. But it has now become a threat to air traffic. On Monday, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Jaipur, issued an advisory urging people not to fly kites or lamps within the 5km periphery of the airport.
In the advisory, the airport authority has stated that kites and ‘manjhas’ can be dangerous for flight operations. “The air traffic control is constantly asking pilots landing here to be careful during the festival when kites dot the sky. Also, the trend of releasing gas lamps can prove to be dangerous,” said a senior official of the air traffic control.

Speaking to TOI, Jaideep Balhara, director, AAI, said, “In 2018, we had a case in which the engine of an aircraft developed a snag after getting caught in ‘manjha’ strings while landing in Jaipur. The lanterns too create problems in the evening.”

The air traffic control is also alerting pilots asking them to “be careful of lanterns as the festival is on”.

“We have issued an appeal in which we have urged people not to fly kites and release lamps within the 5km periphery of the airport,” said a senior official.
