Runway re-carpeting, work on bays at airport to begin in Feb

Trichy: Re-carpeting work of the runway at Trichy international airport will begin in the first week of February during which time some flights will be rescheduled during the night, Airports Authority of India has said. Two more additional bays will also be established as part of development works, airport director K Gunasekaran told TOI.
While the runway work is estimated to cost Rs 20 crore, the additional bays will be established at a cost of Rs 1 crore. A Mumbai-based company has bagged both the contracts and Rs 19.85 crore has been sanctioned already, Gunasekaran said. The runway with a length of 2,423 metres and width of 45 metres is being re-carpeted with tar after ten years. This includes a 580-metre-long stretch made of concrete now. “Frequent landing and take-off of flights usually lead to exhaustion of runways. Natural weather phenomena like rain and sun also affect the runway surface which should be re-laid once in five years. So, re-carpeting is essential for the safety of flights as well as passengers”, Gunasekaran added.
“Re-carpeting activity on runway would lead to disruption of flight movements. To enable the work to be executed without any disruption, flight movements have been rescheduled. Flight operation has been suspended between 1 am and 8 am at the airport”, he further stated.
