Gold worth Rs 1.27 crore seized at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials seized 2.95kg of gold, worth Rs 1.27 crore, from nine passengers at Chennai international airport on Sunday and Monday.
Five cases were registered on Sunday night. Sultan Sahul Hameed, 24, Mohamed Sadam Hussain, 29, Shagul Hamid, 63, all from Ramanathapuram , Basheer Ahmed, 35, of Sivaganga and Sri Lankan national Rathnasiri ,35, who all arrived here from Colombo in an IndiGo flight (6E 1204), were intercepted and searched.

Eighteen bundles of gold paste were found concealed in their rectums. On extraction, 2.059kg of gold, worth Rs 88.88 lakh, was recovered.
Four cases were registered on Monday. Syed Kamardeen, 33, of Ramanathapuram, who arrived here from Dubai in an IndiGo flight (6E66), was intercepted and searched. Two bundles of gold paste were found concealed in rectum. On extraction, 332 grams of gold, worth Rs.14.33, was recovered.
