Govt mulls light rail system to link 2nd airport in Parandur

Chennai: As Parandur in Kancheepuram district has been zeroed in as venue for the proposed second airport, the state government is exploring the possibility of introducing a mass rapid transit link to connect it with the existing airport. While a light rail may link the airport in Meenambakkam to Parandur 62km away for transit passengers, there is also a plan to extend metro rail line from Poonamallee to connect it. Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to shift international flight operations to the second airport.
Sources in the industries department said the suggestion for light rail was floated during discussions about setting up the second airport. “Light rail is the only option for passengers landing at Meenambakkam to proceed towards Parandur. For city passengers, metro rail is an option,” an industries department official privy to developments told TOI. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited, which will appoint a consultant for the second airport, would also study which option will be feasible.
