Kolhapur airport may soon begin flights to Panaji & Ahmedabad

Kolhapur: With passenger traffic crossing 1.25 lakh mark within 14 months of resuming operations and taking more destinations under its purview, the Kolhapur airport has opened new avenues for the city’s development.
Kamal Kumar Kataria, director of Kolhapur Airport, said that with the current development work, the airport will be an integral part of the city.

He said that two new routes — Kolhapur-Panaji and Kolhapur-Ahmedabad — are on the cards for the convenience of passengers. “The decision on the same is yet to be taken, but we will soon see these new destinations on offering,” he said.

The officials from the traders’ union said that the connectivity of the airport to the metro cities has highlighted its importance.

According to Kataria, the airport currently hosts refuelling facility which has proved to be an important asset. When asked on its impact on the current aviation scene, he said that earlier when any aircraft arrived at the Kolhapur airport, the operators had to ensure that they carry extra fuel before departing to their next destination. The limited availability of the fuel restricted the number of passengers to be boarded on a plane. However, it is not a scenario any more. With the availability of aviation fuel, the airlines are able to carry more passengers than before.

Kataria said that they are working relentlessly on the development of the airport which is now an integral part of the city’s transportation needs.

He said that during the floods in August last year, the airport was the sole land mass that was available for rescue and rehabilitation operations which averted any unwarranted situation in the region.

According to Kataria, the air service resumed from December 9, 2018, with Bengaluru and Hyderabad as its to and fro destinations by Air Alliance. At present, the airport is served by Air Alliance, IndiGo, and TruJet on the Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Tirupati and Mumbai routes respectively.
