Officials pin hopes on new taxiway to increase traffic at Vizag airport

Visakhapatnam: With the airport traffic in Visakhapatnam airport coming down following the withdrawal of a number of airlines, airport officials believe that the commissioning of an N5 taxi track will lead to an increase in the number of flight movements.
The annual traffic handled by the Visakhapatnam airport has come down, according to statistics obtained from the Airports Authority of India. The number of aircraft movements saw a decrease with the withdrawal of a number of airlines including Jet Air, Alliance Air, Thai Air Asia and SriLankan Airlines.

The number of domestic aircraft movements up to December 2019 was 12,788, a significant drop from 22,376 movements in 2018-19. The number of international aircraft movements came down to 1,202 from 1,806 in the same time period.

Passenger occupancy in the domestic sector up to December 2019 was 17,22,387, a steep fall from 27,03,261 in 2018-19. Passenger occupancy dropped in the international sector as well, from 1,50,370 in 2018-19 to 96,561 till December 19.

Speaking to TOI, director of Visakhapatnam airport Raja Kishore said, “After the withdrawal of JetAir and other flights, aircraft movements per day came down from 80 to 60. This means that 24% traffic had come down and showed a decline in passenger occupancy.”

“There was a steep decline in passenger occupancy last year. However, we are bridging the gap with other flight operators which will increase connectivity from Visakhapatnam,” added Kishore
