Pakyong airport in Sikkim expected to restart operations soon

The greenfield airport at Pakyong in Sikkim, which has been out of use since August 2019, is likely to restart operations soon.

“Pakyong Airport, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was the 100th airport in India. It will soon be functioning. Compensation to land owners was settled within 6 months of the new government. The land owners had approached high court… Rs 50 crores paid… subsequently the case has been withdrawn,” said Chief Minister PS Tamang.

Speaking to the media, Pakyong airport director said that the airport is open and flights will be resumed soon. “The airport is open. Govt of India and SpiceJet have been negotiating about resuming flights. Any moment it can be resumed. Minister (BS Panth, Tourism & Civil Aviation) has also been talking to them,” said Ramtanu Saha, Director Pakyong Airport.

Pakyong Airport, built at the cost of Rs 605.59 crores, had ceased to function after about 52 -55 flight days due to unsuitable weather, persisting poor visibility and certain other requirements. Now, the airport authorities claim all is well and flights will resume once green signal is received from SpiceJet which was operating a flight earlier.
