Water aerodromes to ‘open’ Indian islands

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning 10 water aerodromes in the Andaman and Nicobar islands as India moves to open up the islands – once largely closed to most non-residential or military visitors – for domestic and international tourism.
The project is also associated with the country’s improved connectivity strategy, which has seen tenders open for development of little used or unused airstrips in the islands and elsewhere.
Environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has been sought for water aerodromes at Long Island, Swaraj Island and Shaheed Island.
They will be the first of their kind in India.
