Coronavirus in Chennai: Tour operators push domestic spots as people cut tours abroad

Chennai: With international travel dipping during the summer over the Covid-19 scare, airlines and tour operators have started to hard sell domestic destinations by offering discounts on fares in April and May.
GoAir has come out with discounted fares to attract passengers. This has led to a general dip in airfare to most of the routes from Chennai. Airlines like IndiGo too are offering discounts and offers for select destinations. Operators now hope that there could be an interest in domestic leisure travel and also that people will look for long holidays rather than short weekend getaways.
Anand Menon, brand leader, Travel Tours, the leisure travel brand of FCM Travel Solutions, said, “With China, southeast Asia and the the far East out of bounds for tourists following the novel coronavirus (nCoV) scare, travellers are looking towards India. Due to better air connectivity, the demand for domestic travel has also gone up. Domestic destinations like Rajasthan, Himachal, Andaman, North East, Kashmir, Ladakh and Goa are coming up as preferred choices with great air, rail and road connectivities.”
“People are opting to travel within the country instead of cancelling holiday plans altogether. We can also expect longer domestic trips instead of just short weekend trips,” he added.
