Coronavirus: Travel industry hit hard with cancellations, decline in demand

The deadly coronavirus hasn't just upset the plans of many travellers who are cancelling their bookings with fear of contracting the infection, but, has also adversely affected the airline and travel industry.

Madhu, a resident of Andheri in Mumbai says that she wanted to visit Thailand in mid-April to witness the Songkran festival, however, she had to cancel her plans due to the coronavirus scare.

"I wanted to travel to Thailand with my husband in mid-April for the Songkran festival. I was really looking forward to it. But, now with the coronavirus scare, I have canned my plans. I wanted to do Europe in June as well. But then I think I will wait for a month or so. If things seem fine then I will look for bookings only by April end. But I will surely look up the list of places where no case of the coronavirus has been reported and then take a final call. I am very upset now," Madhu said.

Sumit, a resident of Pune, was planning a trip with his family and friends to Singapore, Malaysia and Bangkok this April, but, the virus scare has now made him jittery.

"Money and bookings are there but life is more important. I don't want to put my life at unnecessary risk. We are most likely to skip this one," Sumit said.
