Customs officials seize Rs 6 lakh worth narcotics at Chennai airport

Chennai: Officials of Chennai airport customs have seized a consignment of MDMA, also known as ecstasy, which was couriered from France to Arumbakkam. The drug was marked to an address which belongs to a slum tenement which was demolished around 10 years ago, officials said.

Officials said based on information that a parcel containing some narcotic drugs is likely to be smuggled into India from Europe through foreign post office (FPO), the postal intelligence of the air customs seized one unregistered parcel at the FPO, Meenambakkam.
On examination, it was found to contain some blue colour tablets and two plastic pouches containing white crystalline powder. Both the tablets and the powder were tested with narcotics field testing kit and prima facie tested positive for MDMA (methylenedioxy-methamphetamine), a narcotic substance. In all, 158 tablets totally weighing 77g and 19g of white crystalline powder suspected to be MDMA, totally valued at 6.6 lakh, were recovered and seized under the NDPS Act, 1985. Samples have been sent to the Central Revenue laboratory for confirmatory tests.
