Precious gemstones, gold seized from passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials seized precious gemstones worth Rs 31 lakh from a passenger at Chennai international airport on Wednesday.
Based on information, Shabdeen, 66, of Chennai who arrived from Colombo in a SriLankan Airlines flight (UL-125) was intercepted.

When searched, two bundles wrapped with adhesive tape were found concealed in his rectum. On cut opening the bundles, precious gems were found.

A jewellery valuer identified the precious gems as sapphires (both yellow and blue), rubies and chrysoberyl cats eye of various cuts, size and colours totally weighing 3058.4 carat.

The gems were to be handed over to some unknown person outside the airport. He was taken out, but no one approached him. The passenger was arrested.

In other case on Wednesday, Arthi Manoharan, 22, of Trichy who was bound for Colombo in a SriLankan Airlines flight (UL-126) was detained on suspicion of carrying some contraband. On search of her hand bag, one bundle wrapped with black adhesive tape was found. On cut opening, four gold bars weighing 1.496 kg and worth Rs 67.50, were found.
The woman said she had collected the same from a toilet at the arrival immigration side. She was to hand it over to some unknown person in bay area who would take it out of the airport. No one came to receive the packet from her.
