Time to ring-fence domestic air operations too

Indian airports and carriers have implemented several measures proactively to try and curb the spread of Covid-19 from overseas by effectively managing international passengers, but they need to bring the same rigour to domestic operations as well, said employees and experts.

Overseas services will be sharply curtailed until the end of the month , with entries from Europe having been barred. Mandatory quarantine measures may also discourage others from travelling.

Airline and airport executives said temperature screening, regular sanitisation and fumigation of terminals and disinfection of airplanes have been implemented. Separate counters have been provided for flyers from affected countries, along with the mandatory use of gloves and masks by the crew.

Such measures, though, haven’t been adopted for domestic flights, as they have not been mandated by the government, they said.
“It is important that enhanced precautions be done not just for international flights but also for domestic flights, now that the virus is present in India,” said Sanjiv Kapoor, former chief strategy and commercial officer, Vistara.
