New Delhi: In a partial relief to air travellers, the government on Thursday ‘advised’ airlines to give full refunds to those who booked tickets during the lockdown for domestic and international flights cancelled in that period. However, the respite is not for those who booked tickets or and before March 24 (after which lockdown started) for flights between March 25 and May 3 (the lockdown period for now).
Indian carriers, most nearly bankrupt now, are unable to give full refunds to passengers for flights cancelled in the lockdown period due to a severe liquidity crunch. Like airlines abroad, they are asking passengers to utilise the money paid for flying anytime within up to a year.
Following massive public outcry, the aviation ministry issued an order on Thursday, saying: “If a passenger has booked a ticket during the first lockdown period (from March 25 to April 14, 2020) and the airline has received payment … for travel during the same period, for both domestic and international air travel, and refund is sought by the passenger against that booking being cancelled, the airline shall refund the full amount collected without levy of cancellation charge. The refund shall be made within a period of three weeks from the date of request of cancellation.”
Passengers seeking refunds are made to suffer big cancellation charges. There has been a major public outcry on this issue.
The partial relief is for a handful who booked tickets and paid airlines during first lockdown for travel during the extended lockdown period.
“Tickets booked during first lockdown (March 25-April 14) for travel during second lockdown (April 15-May 3, 2020) and for which payments were received by airlines during first lockdown shall be refunded within three weeks from date of request for cancellation by airlines without levy of cancellation charges,” aviation minister H S Puri Tweeted on Thursday.
