Indian airlines issue new cancellation rules

On April 14, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) India issued a circular stating the suspension of all domestic and international flight operations in India until May 3, 2020.

For the passengers who have already booked flight tickets between April 15 to May 3 are not likely to get a cash refund against the cancelled flight instead airlines are offering to reschedule the tickets (without any additional fee).

Indian airlines such as Spicejet, Indigo and Vistara took to their Twitter accounts to inform about this change.

Spicejet said, “We are cancelling the reservations of those who booked themselves for travel until May 3, 2020. Upon cancellation, your entire amount will be maintained in a credit shell and the same may be used to make a fresh booking and travel until February 2021 for the same passenger.”

To make fresh bookings against the cancellations, visit spicejet.com and at the end of the booking process, make payment using the ‘credit shell’ option. In case if you want to view your credit shell balance, visit the ‘manage booking’ tab on their website.

Similarly, Indigo informs its customers that “Your ticket amount is protected in the form of a credit shell in the PNR, which will be shared with you in the next 5-7 days.”

Vistara said they will get in touch with the customers booked for this travel. The airline tweeted that flyers can reschedule their tickets until December 31, 2020. However, the airline told Press Trust of India that the customer will have to pay the fare difference, if any, at the time of rescheduling.

Another airline, Goair is automatically protecting your ticket and fare until May 3, 2021. This applies to all Goair bookings for travel until May 3, 2020.
While most of the Indian airlines accepted bookings, the national carrier Air India has suspended the sale of tickets for domestic and international flights until April 30.
