KIA handling cargo, for now

Though the airport is connected with 12 cargo airlines to the rest of the world ferrying exports like perishables, textiles, high precision equipment, and electronics apart importing electronics, heavy machinery, healthcare & life sciences and auto components, during normal times, for the past one week, it is handling cargo movements, based on requests only.
“International and Domestic Cargo movement continues to take place at the airport every day. Currently, the schedule does not follow a fixed pattern – it is decided based on requests/ or as the need arises from various airlines. The airport continues to function in order to be able to handle these movements. Essential commodities – depending on need – are sent to multiple locations,” a BIAL spokesperson said.
KIA that is ranked third in the domestic cargo handling ranking in the country had in 2019 processed 1,49,603 Metric Tonnes of domestic cargo.
On Thursday, Qatar Airways Cargo announced that it will be adding additional air freight capacity to and from India with the utilization of passenger aircraft carrying freight-only. The airline will operate three weekly flights.
Relief flights
The airport is also handling relief aircraft for evacuation of foreigners stuck in India.
“Some evacuation flights have gone out and continue to go based on requests received from Consulates/ Embassies, subject to DGCA approval,” the airport spokesperson said.
Oman Air will be flying back its nationals today, from Bengaluru.
On March 31, an Air India relief aircraft with German nationals on board, took off from KIA to Frankfurt.
