318 Bangladeshi nationals return from India on special flights

318 Bangladeshi citizens returned home today afternoon on two separate special flights of Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines after being stranded in India for over a month due to flight suspension amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Of them, 151 returned from Delhi by a chartered Biman flight while 167 passengers including 3 infants returned from Chennai by a special flight of US-Bangla Airlines, according to sources at Biman and the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka.

"The special flight of Biman landed at HSIA at 4:43pm," Tahera Khandaker, deputy general manager (public relations) of Biman, told The Daily Star.

Carrying 167 Bangladeshis on board, the special US-Bangla flight landed at 2:54pm, said an official of Aviation Security at HSIA.

From April 20 till today, around 1,700 Bangladeshi nationals -- most of whom went to India for medical treatment -- have so far been brought back from the neighboring country by 11 chartered flights of US-Bangla Airlines and Biman, sources at HSIA said.

Of the 11 special flights, US-Bangla Airlines operated eight while Biman operated three.

Bangladesh High Commission in India earlier said they have kept their efforts on to facilitate the return of more Bangladeshis who are still stranded in India.
