Controversy breaks out over cargo personnel testing positive for Covid-19 at Mumbai airport

Mumbai-based NGO has charged the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) of gross negligence in following the guidelines set by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The NGO alleges that the MIAL is flouting the rules in the cargo section and, hence, is playing with the lives of people by ignoring the safety guidelines at this critical hour.

The NGO on Friday sent a letter of complaint to the Maharashtra chief minister claiming that there was a deliberate failure on the part of the Mumbai airport operator in fumigating the airport cargo section.

The NGO alleged that despite the severity of the situation, there weren't enough efforts being put in place.

"Today one Mr Kapil (name changed) attached to Assistant Drug Controllers office has tested positive for coronavirus. Mr Kapil used to handle inward and outward of bills of entry in the import cargo section and has been dealing with various persons like custom brokers, agents, clearing staff of customs house agents. Primarily, the medical equipment, PPE kits and medicines are being cleared by cargo agents from the Mumbai airport. The Ministry of Home Affairs has given detailed guidelines for running the operations of essential services but Mumbai airport operator is least concerned and does not adhere to these guidelines," read the letter.

Expressing concern over the Covid-19 positive case found in the cargo section. the NGO said, "The said person who tested positive today at the Mumbai airport was dealing with hundreds of persons. In such a case, how will the contact tracing be done?"
