Thiruvananthapuram: The flight from Doha to Thiruvananthapuram carrying 182 passengers touched down at Trivandrum airport on Wednesday. The takeoff was delayed by an hour due to technical reasons before it took off from Calicut airport late in the evening. At the time of this report going to print, the flight had taken off from Doha. The flight was earlier scheduled for Sunday, but was cancelled.
In a few videos posted on social media, the passengers of the flight could be seen holding miniature versions of the national flag as they got ready to board the flight. With 15 pregnant women on board, the flight will bring people from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Seven counters have been set up in the airport for health checkups for the passengers while a thermal face detection camera has also been installed to get their body temperature. The passengers are expected to be moved to quarantine centres by 5.30 am. Twelve KSRTC buses have been arranged which will carry people to institutional quarantine centres in the city as well as to other districts. Taxi services have also been arranged to take people who are permitted to go on home quarantine. “There is a waiting list for the flight. The numbers may vary if some last-minute changes are made,” said K Gopalakrishnan, district collector, while speaking to media persons after visiting the airport on Tuesday.
The cancellation of the Doha-Thiruvananthapuram flight on Sunday has given rise to major controversy stating that the flight was cancelled due to differences over handling and landing charges since Air India is charging passengers despite it being an evacuation mission. The sudden cancellation of the flight over being denied landing permission by Qatar had left the passengers stranded and confused.
