German National stranded at Delhi airport since last 55-days boards flight to Amsterdam

New Delhi: A 40-years old German national, Edgard Ziebat, who was stranded at the transit area of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport since last 55 days due to suspension of flights from India in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic left for Amsterdam on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI.

The German national left on early in the morning on a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight to Amsterdam after testing negative for COVID-19 before boarding, and passing all the screenings necessary for an international travel as per the advisory put in place by the Aviation ministry.

Edgard Ziebat had been living in the international transit area at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi for almost 54 days after the flight he was supposed to take flight for Istanbul was suspended and subsequent air travels were stalled to and from India due to Coronavirus crisis.

However, the authorities at Indira Gandhi airport in Delhi, had made necessary arrangements for his stay after clearing him off through a preliminary investigation, meant to detect the health and security vulnerabilities related to the foreign nationals.

Airport operator (DIAL) Delhi International Airport Limited had provided all basic amenities including foods, clothes, toiletries items and a recliner for sleeping to the German national.

During the interrogation, Ziebat said that he came from Vietnam on March 18 by Vietjet airline and had a connecting flight to Istanbul in Turkey.

But there were no flights available for Istanbul as India had suspended all commercial flight services due to COVID-19, he told the authorities at IGI airport.

Later on, the airport authorities asked the 40-years-old German national to board a special flight to Germany, which was being operated by the German Embassy in New Delhi, but neither the embassy nor the airlines agreed to take him on board. Afterwards, Turkish Airline had also declined to take him on board because he was not carrying a Turkish passport.
