Travel industry welcomes restart of domestic flights

Mumbai: The aviation and travel industry which has been facing unprecedented losses due to coronavirus-led travel restrictions imposed by various government welcomed the Indian government announcement to restart domestic flights from May 25.

Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip said that the resumption of domestic air travel after a shutdown of over 60 days is an important step that will provide access to thousands of people via the quickest means possible.

"It will also go a long way in helping kick-start economic activities as businesses reopen. Safety of travellers is paramount to us and as domestic skies open up we will continue to work closely with our airline partners to ensure safe and convenient travel experience, adhering to the new protocols announced by the ministry," he added.

Dhruv Shringi, co-Founder and CEO, of Yatra.com welcomed the announcement and said that as further details are awaited from the government, it is important to see how sustainable these guidelines will be both for the aviation industry and customers.

"While we anticipate change in customer demand and confidence, but are also hopeful that this move will give the much needed economic stimulus to the tourism sector and travel agents," Shringi said.

Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director, SpiceJet said the resumption will go a long way in lifting the overall economic sentiment in the country. "While the SOP for resumption of operations and details of flights to be operated is still awaited, we are sure that this much awaited move will help a large number of passengers by providing them access to the safest and quickest means of transport," Singh said.
