Jobs, housing at stake for many, Air India cancels Mumbai-Paris flight at last minute, passengers fume

Mumbai: Shruti Chand, a 23-year-old management student studying at a business school in Paris was left teary eyed at the Mumbai International Airport on Monday when she learnt that her Air India flight AI 1117 to Paris had been cancelled suddenly.

With no further information and no help from the Air India staff, Shruti said that she and some of her friends who had traveled early morning from Nashik had no option but to leave the airport and just sit and wait. The 7 hours wait at the airport didn’t result in anything good.

“I don’t know what to do now. Our visas our going to expire soon and we need to renew them. I have already paid for my housing and the place where I am working is calling me back. Now I don’t know what’s going to happen and how’s it going to impact my career. Air India didn’t inform about the cancellation and now we are stuck in Mumbai,” Shruti said, narrating her ordeal.

Frustrated with the entire incident, Shruti says that the national carrier ruined their day. “It’s only after we managed to book the ticket with Air India that many of my friends had taken up internships. Many had taken visa appointments etc. Today we faced a lot of harassment. For a 2:30 PM flight we were informed at 12:30 PM about the cancellation. To top it all they had no guilt. They just said “aaj flight nahi chalegi”. They just want to show that they are doing a great work with Vande Bharat but this is the reality.”
Shruti’s father in Nashik has been worried all day. Talking to India Today TV, he said, “I paid Rs 60,000 for her ticket while other expenses in Paris are already paid for and now they have cancelled the flight and are not even communicating.”

The Air India Mumbai-Paris for June 22 was to take off at 2:30 PM. Sources in Air India said that the airline was denied permission for the said flight to land in Paris on Sunday. But the airline didn’t take measures in time leaving the passengers fuming on Monday.
