Kolkata: Covid-19 positive engineers hide travel history to return to hometown

Kolkata: Two persons, working in Chennai, travelled from Chennai by air and by a private vehicle from Kolkata to Panskura in East Midnapore, despite being Covid-19 positive. The incident has made the West Bengal district administration anxious and raised questions about the vigil at the domestic
airports.
The two persons, who are Mechanical engineers and work in Tamil Nadu’s Chingleput, reached Panskura government-run hospital, on June 14 and informed the security personnel of the hospital that they were Corona Positive and needed to get admitted in the hospital. The duo did not disclose about the Covid-19 infection to the airport authorities and were not even identified during thermal checking and other surveillance mechanisms.
The incident shocked the hospital administration and the duo got admitted after going through their reports. The engineers are getting treatment in the hospital.
The duo had expressed their desire to return to their hometown in West Bengal. The company authorities then sent them for Covid-19 test after which they tested positive on June 13.
West Bengal Transport Minister Subhendu Adhikari has expressed serious concern about the matter and said, “Even after testing positive, how could the two persons travel from Chennai and they were not prevented in both Chennai and Kolkata Airports.” They even hired a private vehicle from Kolkata to East Midnapore, putting so many people at risk in the flight and also in Kolkata and East Midnapore.
Drawing flak against the Central government, the minister has written letter to Chennai and Kolkata Airport authorities and the private airline company Indigo.
“Who will assure that the duo did not affect others in the flight. Who will take responsibility of the incident,” he questioned.
