PE litter: Airport acts after TOI report

Kolkata: Authorities at Kolkata airport, on Monday, moved swiftly to address the issue of PPE litter in the terminal after a bio-hazard alert from health experts and airline crew.
Following a TOI report on Monday on how used PPE were being discarded by arriving passengers all over the terminal, Airports Authority of India (AAI) stationed more bins for collection of used PPE post flights and deployed housekeeping staff in PPE to empty out the bins as soon as they appeared to overflow. The airport operator has also told airlines to guide passengers to discard the PPEs properly and asked airlines to provide passengers in PPE with disposal bag at the time of exiting the plane.
“We had kept large green bins marked for PPE disposal in the baggage claim lounge. Bins have also been placed in the arrival level where passengers exit the aerobridge,” airport director Kaushik Bhattacharjee said.
The official said additional staff had been deployed to clear the bins more regularly so that they did not overflow. Though light in weight, the impervious material of the suit traps air and inflates it, causing it to take up a lot of space and bins to fill up easily.
