'Gift worth Rs 4.7 cr waiting at airport': 'Pilot from Scotland' befriends woman on FB, dupes her of Rs 58 L

Mumbai:  A 69-year-old woman from Mumbai’s suburb Vasai has filed a police complaint alleging that her Facebook friend, who introduced himself as a pilot from Scotland, has defrauded her of Rs 58 lakh on the pretext of sending her a gift worth Rs 4.7 crore.

The complainant, who is a retired teacher, said that a person named Leo Jacobs sent her a friend request on Facebook on May 18. After she confirmed the request, they began chatting and also exchanged phone numbers to connect on WhatsApp. He told her that he was a pilot in Scotland. After some days, he expressed his desire to purchase land in India.

According to a report by Mumbai Mirror, the fraudster told the retired teacher that he would send the money for purchasing the land and she can get it registered in her name. The following day, he informed her that he had air couriered a parcel and asked her to collect it from the airport. He said that the parcel contained the money for purchasing land, flowers and a watch, as a token of thanks. Moreover, he assured her that he would soon come to India.
After some time, a woman called the complainant. She introduced herself as Joshila, a customs department employee. She informed the retired teacher that a parcel consigned in her name has arrived at the airport. However, she would need to pay processing charges as it had a high value.

The complainant paid the amount but Joshila continued calling her for more money under the guise of various charges. She paid a total of Rs 58 lakh in multiple transactions. Finally, she got tired of Joshila’s unending calls for payment and asked her to refund the entire money.
Joshila and the 'pilot' went incommunicado after this. The retired teacher realized that she has been duped and approached the police. A source told MM, the police have procured the call records, bank account details and the IP address of the accused to trace them. Further investigation is underway.
