New Delhi: Low-cost airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet are reportedly leasing wide-body aircraft along with crew to launch long-haul flights to the UK and to a few destinations in Europe.
According to a report in the Economic Times, SpiceJet has already leased an Airbus 330 from Oman Air to launch flights to London from July 27. IndiGo is in discussions to lease three Airbus 330 planes but has yet to finalise the destinations though the likely ones are London and Paris, the publication mentioned citing people in the know.
“SpiceJet would also use Oman Air’s slot available at Heathrow to launch this flight. They are also looking at leasing three more for such planes,” the publication quoted one of the sources as saying.
Worth mentioning here is that India has signed deals with the US, UK, France, Germany and the UAE to operate limited direct flights, resuming scheduled international passenger traffic that was suspended amid the Covid-19 pandemic. National carrier Air India will operate most of these flights, IndiGo and Spice-Jet plan to fly long-haul for the first time under these short-term air-bubble deals.
