Indigo's 10% job cuts heralds a bumpy ride

The worst fears are coming true for staff in India’s airline industry. If the announcement of massive job cuts on July 20 by the country’s largest carrier, IndiGo, is anything to go by, India’s aviation sector is on the threshold of a heavy pruning of employees as companies try to keep their head above water while the continuing Covid-induced disruptions stifle operations and impact cash flows. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Centre for Aviation (CAPA), a research organisation, said on July 21 that IndiGo’s move ‘is the beginning of a painful process for Indian aviation as things start to unravel from the impact of Covid-19 in India.’
