Sensing opportunity, SpiceJet eying wide body for int’l charters

New Delhi: With resumption of post-covid normalcy in travel world at least some months away, SpiceJet is reportedly planning to wet lease (hire an aircraft complete with operating crew) wide body aircraft. The low cost carrier (LCC) is learnt to be looking to start with one Airbus A330 and use it for charters to and from India. The travel bubbles India is planning to create with some countries like US, UK, France and Germany could see people travelling nonstop instead of one-stop as many used to do in pre-covid times.

On Thursday, India created a special travel window with UAE that will enable Indians working and living in UAE to return on airlines of both countries. The enabling agreement, interestingly, says “on India to UAE journey, all these flights will carry only those passengers who are destined for the UAE.”

In these circumstances when big foreign airlines have parked their aircraft and furloughed or laid off their thousands of their crew members, SpiceJet is reportedly in talks to lease wide bodies, beginning with one and then see how it goes. Comments were sought from SpiceJet on the issue and awaited till the time of going to press.
