BJP welcomes Centre’s move to privatise Guwahati airport

Guwahati: The BJP’s Assam unit on Sunday welcomed the Centre’s move to privatise the Guwahati airport, even as opposition parties strongly criticised the move. The Union Cabinet had last week approved leasing out the Jaipur, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram airports.

In a statement, the Assam BJP said leasing out the airport will enhance its standard. “The airport (Guwahati) will raise the standard of services to international standards through the process of transfer based on public and private partnership. The airport's terminal and other tourist facilities will be privatized as the partnership seeks to provide high quality services through private partnership,” the statement read.

It added that the idea of providing high-quality services does not necessarily mean complete privatization of the airport. “The runway of the airport and its traffic control system will be in the hands of Airport Authority of India,” it said.

Assam BJP spokesperson Lakhya Konwar said the private partnership is aimed at improving the quality of services for passengers from the entry to the boarding point. “The Congress and the Left parties, motivated by purely political ambitions, have resorted to extreme misinterpretation in this regard without going into the depths of the subject,” he added.
