Chennai: With lockdown norms relaxed at the national level, Chennai airport will see resumption of direct flights to Mumbai from Monday.
It is expected to boost passenger traffic at the city airport as Mumbai is a popular route and benefit those who want to board international flights to the Middle East and Europe from Mumbai. There was one flight from Chennai on Saturday at 2.45pm. But there is no flight on Sunday. Vistara has slotted a flight on weekdays.
Passenger numbers were not increasing at Chennai airport as two popular routes — Mumbai and Kolkata — did not have flights. Operations are yet to resume to Kolkata.
But, there is demand for more flights on Chennai-Mumbai, Chennai-Madurai, Chennai-Hyderabad routes. An airport official said airlines have started to push for more flights on some of the cities like Madurai, Hyderabad and also some small towns which were served by flights under the regional connectivity scheme. An airline official said, “There is good potential for flights to many cities to which no one is operating. People stranded here prefer flights.” Airlines are also looking at deploying bigger aircraft on routes where they were flying small planes.
