Gaya: The Kozhikode tragedy has once again brought into focus the short size of the Gaya airport runway. The Gaya airport runway is 2286 meters long, while the Kozhikode runway is 2,860 meters long and much longer than the Gaya airport runway and yet the tragedy occurred.
The proposal to add 500 meters to the existing length of the runway remains un-executed for more than a decade now. As per the plan, besides making the runway longer by 500 meters, at least 15 meters are to be added to the existing width of 45 meters. As per official documents, about 100 acres of land are required for the runway expansion.
For several years, the state government and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) fought over the cost of land. Whereas AAI wanted free land, as was offered by some states including Tamil Nadu, the state government insisted on AAI footing the land bill. Finally, a few years back, the AAI deposited Rs 11 crore in the treasury for land acquisition.
