Geographic survey for new airport begins in Peddapalli

Peddapalli: In an encouraging development, the Airports Authority of India has begun the exercise for the proposed airport at Basanthnagar with the geographical conditions being assessed in a radius of 20 km of the proposed area.

Personnel from a private survey agency from Nasik visited Basanthnagar airstrip on Wednesday and examined the situation. Geographical situation in 20 km radius will be mapped with the help of satellite in the coming 15 days.
Satellite mapping is being done in Palakurthi, Peddapalli and Anthergoan mandals, survey team members said.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Peddapalli RDO K Shankar Kumar said a survey team would study the condition of the runway and other geographical situations with the help of satellites by camping in Basanthnagar for the next 15 days.

Thought the issue of setting up of airport near Basanthnagar was pending since long, it came to light recently with the Airports Authority of India seeking the details of high flood levels at the proposed airport from the State government.

On August 15, 2020, Assistant General Manager, Business Development, AAI, New Delhi, wrote to the State government seeking the details of flood level.

Based on AAI request, Engineer-in-Chief, Roads and Buildings, Telangana, wrote letters to superintendent engineers of six districts — Warangal, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahabubnagar and Nizamabad on August 18.
The superintendent engineers were asked to provide details of high flood level for the six proposed airport locations — Warangal, Adilabad, Jakranpalli of Naziabad, Badradri-Kothagudem, Basanthnagar of Peddapalli and Devarakadra of Mahabubnagar.
Prior to this, AAI technical expert Srinivasa Murthy visited Basanthnagar airstrip on August 10, 2020 and submitted a techno feasibility report on August 14.
Based on the report, the AAI authorities sought a high flood level report from the State government.
High tension wires and hillocks, which are likely to be a hurdle for the airport, will also be mapped.
