India’s airlines gasping for breath

Official data shows that Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown have played havoc with the aviation sector, resulting in a sharp fall in the number of flights operated and the number of fliers from airports across the country. It’s not as if the crisis facing the aviation sector is not known. Except for state carrier Air India, which operated the Vande Bharat mission and evacuation flights, the rest were grounded for two months, hitting their balance sheets. But even after domestic flight operations resumed on May 25, all airlines have been fighting to survive owing to record low demand.
