Air hostess alleges physical & verbal assault from locals suspecting COVID infection

Kolkata: A 23-year-old air hostess engaged with Indigo Airlines has claimed she has been verbally abused, physically assaulted and threatened as she could contract the COVID-19 during her duty and infect the locality. This incident has been reported in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata.

Sudipa Adhikari who has been an air hostess for over two years now has resumed her duty as domestic air travel picked up the pace. “People look down upon me as though I carry the COVID-19 infection. The neighbours don’t allow my parents to go to the shops and have threatened me. A few days ago, when I was feeding stray dogs they even pushed me and said I have no place in this society.”
The Indigo cabin crew claims that her neighbours have resorted to name-calling and have questioned her choice of profession. “My company has taken several safety measures, even the Government has put in place elaborate measures at every airport but they have threatened to oust me from this locality,” said Sudipa.

The air hostess has filed complain with Howrah City Police and probe is underway. But this fresh incident once again highlights the stigma associated with the COVID-19 virus and the ordeal faced by few who have to answer the call of duty amidst such trying times.

Earlier in March, a similar case was reported from Kolkata when the cabin crew posted a video narrating her ordeal on social media which went viral. Both the Centre and State Government have taken initiatives to educate the masses that the fight is against the virus and not humans.
