Customs seize Psychotropic drugs at Chennai airport, one arrested

Chenna: Chennai Air Customs officials on Tuesday seized 3,440 tablets of psychotropic drugs from postal parcels which were destined to the USA at Foreign Post Office in Chennai airport.
In a press release, Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport said based on intelligence, the Customs officials intercepted some postal parcels suspected to contain psychotropic drugs.
On opening the parcels, 234 strips of Addwize 10 mg (Methylphenidate), 50 strips of Lonazep 1mg (Clonazepam) and 40 strips of Zolfresh 10 mg (Zolpidem) were found. 2,340 tablets of Methylphenidate, 600 tablets of Zolpidem and 500 tablets of Clonazepam were recovered from the parcels. These drugs are psychotropic substances falling under Schedule “X” and “H” of Drug and Cosmetic Rule, 1945 and are also covered under the NDPS Act, 1985.
In all, 3,440 tablets of psychotropic drugs were seized from the parcels which were destined to Florida in the USA and were booked by a Chennai-based person involved in pharmaceutical wholesale business in Chennai. Follow up searches were carried out and he was arrested.
