India’s civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri has announced expansion plans for Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar.
Several steps will be taken to further enhance international and domestic aviation connectivity from the airport.
The ministry has proposed to expand the integrated passenger terminal building at the cost of ₹240 crore. The existing capacity of 2.5 million passengers per annum will increase to 5.5 million passengers per annum.
Around ₹60 crore has been allocated for construction of apron, parking stands and upgradation of a terminal building.
The airport also reports that in the last two years, 20 new flights per week have been added to Birmingham, Sharjah, Stansted, Abu Dhabi, and Toronto.
Puri said “Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar is also proposed to be leased out on PPP ((Public-Private Partnership) basis, along with five other airports under Airports Authority of India. Modalities are being worked out.”
