Gold worth Rs 1.5 crore seized from 14 passengers at Chennai airport

hennai: Customs officials at Chennai international airport seized 2.82kg gold, worth Rs 1.5 crore, from 14 passengers on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Wednesday, seven passengers who arrived from Dubai in an Emirates flight (EK 544) were intercepted at the exit of customs arrival hall on suspicion of carrying gold.

When questioned persistently, they confessed to carrying bundles of gold paste concealed in their rectums. When searched, nine bundles were recovered from which 1.28 kg gold was extracted. Also, four gold cut bits and two gold chains were recovered from their pant pockets. A total of 1.43 kg of gold valued at Rs 75.5 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Act.

On Tuesday night, seven passengers who arrived from Dubai in an Air India Express flight (IX 1644) were intercepted and searched. This yielded nine bundles of gold paste from their rectums. A total of 1.39 kg of gold of 24 K purity, worth Rs 72.51 lakh, was seized.
