Discounts to woo cargo carriers at KIA

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is proposing to offer a discount on landing charges to Indian cargo carriers at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The airport operators have issued an Request for Proposal to Indian carriers operating scheduled international cargo operations.

The main objective of the proposal is to not only support the Central Government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat or Self Reliant Mission to support the Indian economy in the flight against Covid-19, but also boost the cargo capacity at the airport.

“Towards supporting the ‘Self-Reliant Indian Mission’ (Atmanirbhar Bharat) of the Government of India (GoI) and the Indian aviation sector to tide over the covid-19 crisis, BIAL intends to increase the cargo capacity by offering a discount on Landing Charges for all Indian Carriers,” the Request for Proposal states.

BIAL is looking at offering a discount on landing charges to Indian cargo operators engaged in the operations of international cargo movement for a one-year period.

“BIAL intends to increase the cargo capacity by offering a discount on Landing Charges for all Indian Carriers engaged in schedule international cargo operations with wide bodied freighters and/or passenger to cargo converted wide-body flights, for a period of 12 months from launch of route (Benefit Period) provided the route is launched no later than December 31, 2020,” it added.

As per data provided by BIAL, during the period between April and July, the Airport’s cargo market share rose to 15.3% from 11.2%.

“Before the pandemic, the airport’s cargo volumes were distributed between Freighter and Passenger aircraft in a 40:60 ratio. However, the lockdown and subsequent restrictions on international scheduled passenger flights, impacted cargo movements. Several airlines commenced ‘cargo-only’ flights using passenger aircraft to bolster depressed global airfreight capacity and drive a spike in cargo demand,” BIAL had earlier said. It added that during this period, about 40% of the airport’s cargo was transported by Passenger-to-Cargo (PTC) aircraft. The modified passenger aircraft into freighters are known as PTC aircraft.
