Flying high: Kurnool airport likely to be operational soon

Amaravati: Kurnool, which to proposed to become the judicial capital of the state, is likely to have its airport operational in the coming days. The final stretch of works on the airport, located at Orvakal near Kurnool city, have picked up pace and are likely to be completed in a fortnight’s time.

With the Airports Authority of India completing the bidding to operate the services, a formal green signal from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation will be obtained after the completion of all pending works.

Sources said chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed officials to put all pending works related to the airport on the fast track. A domestic flight operator, TruJet, is said to have secured permission to operate services from Kurnool to Vijayawada (Gannavaram), Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Hyderabad under the Udan Regional Connectivity Scheme.

Work on the airport started in 2017 and was targeted to be completed in 24 months. Interestingly, then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu had hurriedly inaugurated the airport even even before the completion of works, ahead of the 2019 assembly elections. The last phase of works were kept in abeyance for about a year, after YSRC formed the government, due to paucity of funds. Just when works were about to resume, the Covid-19 outbreak stopped everything. The works took off recently after Jagan asked finance minister Buggana Rajendranth Reddy, who hails from Kurnool, to expedite the project.
