Rs 15L gold found on plane from Dubai

Panaji: Gold smuggling activity appears to have picked up once again, with sleuths from the Commissionerate of Customs foiling an attempt to smuggle gold into the country from Dubai, UAE. The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs seized gold bars weighing 345g and valued at Rs 15.4 lakh from a repatriation aircraft that arrived at Goa on Sunday.

The unit, headed by assistant commissioner of Customs (airport) Y B Sahare, seized the gold bars from under a passenger seat. The aircraft had arrived with 143 passengers, but no passenger came forward to claim the gold.

“The modus operandi used by the smugglers was to conceal the gold below the passenger seat so that the same could be picked up by the domestic passenger travelling by the same aircraft from Goa to Mumbai or by the ground handling staff,” a Customs official said.

The office of the commissioner of Customs said further investigation is in progress. This year, the commissionerate has seized 6.6kg of gold worth Rs 2.5 crore at Goa International Airport, Dabolim.
