Gold smuggling racket at Chennai airport busted, five held

Chennai: Customs officials have arrested five people after busting a gold smuggling racket involving an airport housekeeping contract staff at the Chennai international airport.

Officials said 6.9kg gold worth 3.6 crore was seized at the airport in two separate cases.

On Thursday, officials maintained a vigil in the transit area after getting an alert that gold was being smuggled by a passenger from Dubai who arrived aboard flight 6E 8497.

One airport janitor, who was seen going to the toilet, was followed by officials and caught while retrieving two black bundles from a waste bucket. When the bundles were cut open, three gold paste packets weighing 2 kg were recovered. On extraction, 1.81 kg gold worth 93.2 lakh was recovered and seized, officials said.

Sheikh Usman,35, the passenger from Trichy, was intercepted at the exit. The janitor was identified as Gnanasekar,31, an employee of M/s Service Master Clean Limited (SMCL), which provides housekeeping services at the airport.

When questioned, he told officials that his colleague directed him to collect bundles from the transit toilet on orders from his supervisor Kumar.
