Gold worth Rs 2.06 crore seized at Chennai airport, two arrested

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai international airport seized four kg of gold, worth Rs 2.06 crore, on the Thursday and Friday and arrested two passengers.

Based on specific information, Shagul Ameed, 39, of Cuddalore, Mohammed Baisul, 24, of S P Pattinam, Barkath Basha, 36, of Chennai, Syed Ahamed, 26 ,of Salem, Adam, 41, of Pasipattinam, and Sakkla Sarthar, 55, of Chennai, who arrived from Dubai in flydubai (FZ8517), AI Express (IX 1644) and IndiGo (6E-8497) flights, were intercepted and searched.

Nineteen bundles of gold paste weighing three kg were recovered from their rectums which yielded 2.6 kg of gold. A chain and a gold plate (100 grams) were recovered from hand baggage. A total of 2.7 kg gold valued at Rs 1.39 crore was seized. Two of the six passengers were arrested.

On Friday, based on information, Emirates flight (EK 542), which arrived from Dubai, was rummaged. Two gold paste packets wrapped with black adhesive tape weighing 1,448 grams were recovered from under the cushion of one of the aircraft seats. On extraction, 1.3 Kg of gold worth Rs 67.25 lakh was recovered.
