KIA's north runway to be open for service, soon

With rehabilitation work at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) north runway (old runway) in its last stages, the airport operator is looking for a service provider to maintain it.

“Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) intends to procure services “Maintenance of north runway associated taxiway, apron, other pavements and airside buildings including additional civil works” (‘services’) from a suitably qualified and experienced company,” states the Request for Proposal (RFP) by the operator.

The north runway had been closed for rehabilitation from June 22.

The rehabilitation includes strengthening and resurfacing of the runway as well as installation of runway centre line lights. “These enhancements offer flexibility to operate both the runways in low visibility and adverse weather conditions,” it had said.

At present, the south runway (new runway) is currently handling flights and is expected to become Cat III B compliant soon. Recently, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued an Aeronautical Information Publication Supplement (AIP) for low visibility procedures for RWY 09R/27l KIA which is to come into effect from December 31 onwards.
