J’suguda airport now has ILS

The Instrumental Landing System (ILS) has been completed at the VSS Airport here after three years. The base work, house and other construction works had been undertaken last year.

During the lockdown period, the ILS had come from Delhi by a trawler. The engineers from Delhi took up the installation work of the ILS. On completion of the ILS, on Sunday, a plane of the Airport Authority of India had done trial run, flight in sky  and landing formalities.

On necessary approval by DGCA, flights can take up and land in opposite weather conditions in Jharsuguda airport with the help of ILS. The approval may take at least two months, said  Director of the Airport Kishore Kumar Senapati. This ILS has been procured from overseas and  established in the Airport at a cost of Rs 26 crore.

Earlier, the planes could not land or take off in the airport in simple fog or rain due to non-availability of ILS in Jharsuguda airport. Hence, many flights were cancelled  or diverted to Bhubaneswar or Kolkata for landing leaving the passengers in great trouble. The setting up of the ILS within only 3 years of opening of VSS Airport is a matter of pride for airport, said Senapati.
