2.4kg of gold seized, passenger arrested at Chennai airport

Chennai: Chennai airport customs officials seized 2.4kg of gold on Sunday and arrested a passenger on Monday for carrying foreign currencies.

Seven passengers who arrived here from Dubai in an Air India Express flight (IX-1644) on Sunday were intercepted and searched. Six gold chains weighing 450 gram were recovered from the handbags of Askar Ali, 44, Sharim Foulath, 20, and Shaik Abdulla, 41, all from Chennai.

During search of the baggage of Kader Hussain,47, and Mohamed Ibrahim,45, two gold chains concealed in back cover of their mobiles and two chains from their handbags were recovered. Two gold foils concealed in a checked-in carton box and two chains from a handbag were recovered from Natheem Khan,30, of Chennai.

Five gold coins which were cleverly stuck to the bottom of a carton box of one Yakub ,62 ,of Trichy was also recovered.

Totally, 12 gold chains, five gold coins and two gold foils, weighing 1.10 kg and worth Rs 56 lakh, were recovered.

Eight passengers -- Mohamed Hussain,26 of Pudukkottai, Manikandan Subramani, 26, Shamirul Khan, 29, and Abdul Arasath Parveez, 21, of Chennai, Mohamed Hanifa, 27, Thameem Ansari, 23 of Ilayangudi and Mohamed Farooq, 22, of Ambur and Askarali,28, of Trichy -- who arrived by flydubai flight (FZ 8517) on Sunday were intercepted and searched. Their handbags had 17 gold cut bits, 10 gold chains and two rectangular plates. As much as 1.32 kg gold worth Rs 67 lakh was recovered.
