Gold worth Rs 4.3 crore seized from passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport seized 8.45 kg of gold, worth Rs 4.3 crore, in the last 24 hours. Nine people, including a woman, were arrested.

Based on information, 17 passengers, including four women, who arrived here from Dubai in flydubai (FZ 8515) and Emirates (EK 542) flights were intercepted at the exit.

When searched, 48 bundles of gold paste weighing 9.03 kg were recovered from their rectums. On extraction, 7.72 kg of gold, worth Rs 3.93 crore, was recovered.

On further search, 12 gold cut bits weighing 386 gram and one gold chain weighing 74 gram were recovered from their pants pockets and hand bags.

A total of 8.18 kg of gold, worth Rs. 4.16 crore, was seized, and nine people were arrested.
